A lot of our time is spent on building models, namely software models of the real world. These can be data models, UML diagrams, object models,…
At TenForce we are always searching for new ways to model the world around us. We are convinced that a good model helps our customers to run their business better. That’s why we are good at building applications that manage work.
We love to build data models for relational data bases but we have been keeping an eye on other modeling paradigms: OO, XML, … In addition some of us (do not pity them too much) have a degree in linguistics / semantics. This brings new insights.
Today these different angles really converge. We are convinced this convergence will bring powerful solutions. We follow what is going on at W3C and actually read the specifications. And in our own pragmatic way we apply these concepts in our products, projects and services.
We are digging into RDF, OWL, taxonomies, … because we believe that these concepts are a way to increase the value of the available and future data around us.
Wolters Kluwer is a good example. We designed and built an application for thesaurus management. This is an example where the concepts of what is called semantic web already today bring real business benefits.
A taxonomy (which is basically a tree of knowledge to classify information) modeled in OWL allows the publisher to keep on refining and specifying the thesaurus without getting stuck. At the same time the publisher can consolidate concepts from different domains and industries. This approach also allows the publisher to work multi-lingual. As a result, thesauri are crucial instruments to categorize and disclose terabytes of documents in a (semi-)automated way. In addition this “knowledge” can be made available to other applications, portals, websites, e-books.
We will integrate these concepts in our (project) management solution. This will bring, for example, the following:
- An individual project manager will receive better adapted advice.
- Knowledge and expertise can be shared and integrated in an automated solution.
- Methodologies, guidelines, standards, …(like PMBOK, Prince2, ) will be an integral part of the solution.

We are organizing a seminar on Thursday March the 13th 2008. Check these pages or send a mail to info@tenforce.com.
The seminar will bring:
- Semantic web, OWL, taxonomies, … basic concepts,
- An application to manage and integrate taxonomies,
- A real case of applied semantic web by a publisher, Wolter Kluwer.
