Lost in the world of semantic web, taxonomies and OWL?
Wondering what the real business value is of these new technologies?
Asking yourself how to extract meaningful information out of vast amounts of data?
Looking for an efficient way to enrich your existing data?

Through a free seminar on Thursday March the 13th TenForce will show you where to use the new concepts, what the business value can be and what the technology challenges are. 3 Experienced speakers with diverse backgrounds guarantee a 360° exploration of the semantic web and knowledge management domain.

Introduction – Welcome

5min (Mondeca – TenForce – WKB)

Real world current applications of semantic technology

15min (Mondeca)

Applying semantic technologies whether for internal enterprise applications or for public web applications. Deploying semantic technology today creates potential for exploitation of the semantic web in the future. Examples: WKB, Nievres …

Expected business benefits

15min (TenForce)

Better quality products for information providers. More accessible information. Better ways to provide information in context.

Overview and positioning of the new concepts and underlying technologies

20min (TenForce)

Taxonomy, thesaurus, ontology, metadata, content annotation and classification (today’s standards’ definitions):

  • What knowledge can we formalize and how do semantic web standards support this?
  • Enabling technologies RDF (RDFA, XHTML M12N), OWL, SKOS, XTM, Microformats, DCMI
Example Business case

20min (WKB)

Introducing a knowledge technology solution (Thesaurus management) at WKB:

  • Situation of thesaurus management for the WKB business.
  • Impact of the tools on work organization, and work automation.
  • Business benefits short term (realized) and long term (expected).
Overview of implementation and roll-out of the system

10min (TenForce)

Technology, tools, services.

Some background

Business Opportunities with Knowledge Systems

Properly used knowledge will improve business processes and the quality of a service or a product. However, knowledge comes at a cost. So it is important to correctly assess opportunities and to target investments. When knowledge is critical in the production process, the service delivery process, or in the end product, it is important to look at opportunities to:

  • Increase productivity and accuracy,
  • Share knowledge and knowledge skills on the work floor,
  • Sustain knowledge acquisition maintenance efficiently,
  • Improve product quality and customer service level.
Representing, Organizing and Maintaining Knowledge

Knowledge is applied in all organizations: manufacturing, engineering, services, finance and government. Knowledge is also applied as well in the internal business organization as in the end product and in the communication with business partners.

However, knowledge is not a unique tangible thing. It has many facets. Achieving and applying knowledge is participating to a knowledge building process. Some levels in this process are:

  • Establishing business context to focus the knowledge process and its objectives,
  • Documenting concepts and establishing a vocabulary are essential for communicating about the problem space;
  • Classification schemes (e.g. thesauri, taxonomy, subject lists),
  • Modeling concepts by adding meta data and relationships,
  • Describing logical constraints and modeling rules,
  • Knowledge maintenance (e.g. validation, inference),
  • Translating and customizing knowledge to the end-user or product needs.
Knowledge Management and the Impact of Semantic Web Technologies

Traditional ways of knowledge organization and usage are being revisited. The semantic web effort has developed new technologies and new tools are becoming available.

  • Technologies and tools for modeling ontologies (OWL), storing and representing knowledge. Including specific (extensible) technologies for thesauri and taxonomies (SKOS),
  • Documentation standards for annotating web-documents with formal semantics,
  • Search and retrieval standards for augmenting the end-user functionalities.
