For most people "Information Technology" is still a black box. Or even a box of Pandora! Probably IT people themselves are to blame, they always make software and computers seem complex and a kind of magic. Would that be a kind of territorial defense, maybe?
That's why we organize an event, especially for those who are fed up with hearing IT say "what you ask, is not possible". At the event we will explain - or should I say "show" - one of the most innovative IT technologies: Open Data. (And that's the last time we'll say 'technology' or 'IT'.)

These terms are very often used interchangeably… and cause a lot confusion doing so! These ‘things’ happen to be our expertise at TenForce: we develop them and make systems that use them. And pragmatic as we are we usually don’t bother too much about the right name. ‘Cause what’s in a name? That which we call a taxonomy by any other name would work as well. But we don’t want you to be confused either, so let’s go for a short ride through the land of Knowledge Organization Systems.
What do they have in common?
Taxonomies, thesauri and ontologies are systems that help you organize your knowledge.
Think of a library: the knowledge is kept in books and placed on shelves in an alphabetical order. A very practical system! We all know how to find a book when we know the title or the author.

Since 3 years now TenForce is working on a large scale project for Wolters Kluwer. Dave Wood mentions it in his newly published book called ‘Linking Enterprise Data’ as one of the top five real-world success stories. These projects show how Semantic Technology is applied to real-world information management issues faced by enterprises. With success!

Monday May 17 was a big day for Belgian Semanticians. Can you say big ‘evening’? In the early evening more than 20 people passionate about Semantic Web Technologies gathered at our offices. They chatted, they talked, they presented their latest work and exchanged thoughts. They got to know each other, outside the web 2.0. And they had a fresh Stella, as it was a Belgian meetup after all!

Our Semantic Technology Lab developed a practical tool to browse a taxonomy using the SKOS model. Browsing the RDF data behind the model makes them tangible.
SKOS is a recommendation by W3C to support the use of classification systems like thesauri, taxonomies and subject heading lists in a semantic implementation. In fact it provides a standard way to represent knowledge organization systems using the Resource Description Framework (RDF).

The cultural sector & the semantic web... did you know those two are close friends? It’s not immediately what you might expect, but the Semantic Web sure is a hot topic in the cultural sector in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Last week’s seminar on The Digital Future of Cultural Heritage had to limit their registration up to 100 participants. We know that ‘semantic’ is the buzz-word wherever you go, but the large attendance in this specific sector made me wonder what is linking them. Why is the cultural sector interested in semantic web technologies?
